The alternative is that separating a triangle like that produces an area which is 25% of the original triangle (if I'm understanding it correctly), so to claim that the answer is 50% of the original area, the AI answer is out by a factor of 2, or 100% over.
Either way, I wouldn't say it's 50% wrong!
